SALIVA

Saliva is important for our well-being and we need it to speak, chew and swallow. Normally we produces 1-1,5 liters of saliva per day. There are both large and small salivary glands in the mouth. The large, salivary glands forms saliva when we eat and chew. This kind of saliva has a higher pH-value (pH 7,5) which contribute to quickly raise the pH-value in the mouth. The smaller salivary glands form saliva throughout the whole day, even at night, and are scattered in the palate and on inside of the cheeks. This kind of saliva has a lower pH-value (around 6-6,5) then chewing-stimulated saliva, the more viscos and protected saliva lubricates the mouth. Too little saliva or the wrong compound saliva (low pH-value <7) increases the risk for dry mouth, bacteria, plaque, fungal infections, caries and many other things.
